Character Name: Nicholas Corleone Bernard
Species: Human
Clan: Anderssen Research Corporation (ARC)
Occupation: Advisor, Ex-CEO of ARC
Age: 86
Gender: Male
Eye color: Blue
Hair color: Gray-white (at least what remains of his hair)
Height: 5'8" (if standing straight)
Weight: 130 lbs. (on Earth)
Physical Description: Nicholas is in fairly good condition for his age due to having had access to the best modern medical advances could offer. However, even that can only do so much against time, and his years clearly show on him. He stands with a pronounced stoop and requires a cane to walk. While not in public, he uses a wheelchair due to how much effort it takes him just to move around. Even so, behind his wrinkled face are eyes that, while friendly, reflect as much sharpness and cunning as they did when he was young. Perhaps more.
He takes care to present himself well and wears a slightly worn, but neat suit. In more casual settings, he'll often go around with a sweater just to keep warm.
Background: Nicholas grew up in the slums of the United Trade Federation controlled sector of Rome, Italy. His parents gave him up at a very young age and he grew up fighting to survive and constantly involved in gang activity and trouble with the (usually corrupt) local enforcers of the corp-run area.
As was typical with the UTF's practices, he spent the rest of the time working jobs with absurdly dangerous conditions and long hours, hoping to someday earn enough to pay for passage out of the sector. As was also typical, this was next to impossible thanks to the large number of bureaucratic roadblocks and processing fees for nearly everything there. He eventually gave this up as hopeless and joined the UTF military to pull himself up.
During his time in the military, he fought in two large corporate wars and, due to his ambition and cleverness, he quickly advanced in ranks and became quite respected for his strategic mind, charisma, and leadership. He surprised everyone, however, when after securing just enough to move on, he simply simply quit, broke his contract, and wormed his way past the usual safeguards to prevent precisely that kind of thing. He simply disappeared from their radar for the next 15 years.
When he was finally located he'd been slowly but surely working his way up in the nearby ARC-controlled sector where he'd gained enough power through years of maneuvering that he held a position important enough that he was more or less untouchable without engaging in an expensive conflict with ARC. His career continued to skyrocket until he was a trusted second to the CEO. A couple of decades later, he arranged a sudden hostile takeover and ended up in charge of ARC.
Under his leadership, the company grew into a prominent force of Italy, and while there was much suspicion and a great number of extremely abhorrent actions that took place in the sector, few conclusively lead back to ARC itself and none ever lead all the way back up to him. The company eventually began specializing more and more on medical research in response to changing conditions across the globe, and when the illness broke out, they were one of the leading researchers in finding a cure, pulling in financial support from a variety of small companies, other interested parties, and the dwindling governments around the world.
When the decision to evacuate Earth came, Nicholas made a calculated move that seemed unexpectedly philanthropic to the rest of the world. He liquidating nearly all of his company's resources and used the funds to build ships and provide colony supplies for all his employees and a great deal of others in need with a focus on the Pandora colony, while asking nothing in return. As a result, a great number of people that did go to Pandora only could do so directly because of him. With him, he brought his private research team that is still working hard on Pandora to unlock the key to eliminating X7Y9. While technically they work for the colony, orders usually come through him.
Because of all this, Nicholas currently holds an enormous amount of influence in the colony due to favours owed, gratitude, and the fact that he controls the most promising research that can stop the sickness slowly devouring them. Many of the colonists were previous employees who still view him as a benevolent boss, even if ARC no longer exists. For the first few years, he and other leaders helped in setting up the colony, its government, and organizing it so it could survive against the hardships of Pandora. After that, he promptly retired and now spends most of his time as an advisor in colonial decisions and management. He is unofficially seen as one of its leaders.
Nicholas now presents himself as a wisened, slightly old-fashioned, kind figure in the colony who is always happy to impart sage advice if you're willing to risk the occasional lecture about "youth these days."
Despite this, he is, unbeknownst to most, every bit the conniving, backstabbing, ambitious man that he was before back on Earth where he amassed a frightening amount of power from nothing over the course of his life.
He's amoral, views others are mere resources, enjoys manipulating people just for the feeling of power it gives him, is ruthlessly pragmatic, and poisonously charismatic. However, for the most part, he's simply just too old and tired to bother with much anymore. He still maintains a large amount of power he can bring to bear at any time, but he rarely utilizes any of it - at least visibly - except for occasional trivial matters, which he does just to keep in practice.
Abilities: Leadership, manipulation, is an frighteningly good liar. Can scheme circles around most others. On the more benign side, he's also pretty good with logistics and efficient organization. And, amoral or not, he's still pretty wise and really does offer pretty good advice - even when the advice is crafted to achieve a selfish agenda.
Strengths: Intelligence, people-skills, ruthlessness, influence within the colony, a good reputation.
Weaknesses: Physically frail, not very fast, and could be defeated by an overly big sneeze, and he's more than a little bit of a sociopath. He's quite vulnerable to sickness, which happens quite frequently given that he's suddenly in a completely alien environment. Even if all the air in the complex is filtered, there's still plenty of weird stuff that gets through that is mostly harmless to everyone else, but which can cause him problems. He'd dependent on a number of medications.
