The year is 2139. The RDA has been on Pandora for seven years, conducting an expedition to mine and ship the superconductor known as Unobtainium. This mineral has myriad uses and is extremely valuable, but the mining operations are going slowly -- no thanks to the planet's natives, who don't seem to be happy with the whole alien-invaders-digging-up-our-forest thing.
Hence the Diplomatic Dispatch Unit (DDU): a group of linguists, scientists, and diplomats who have just arrived on Pandora in order to foster long-overdue relations with the native species. This team's main goal is to try and communicate with the locals and find a solution so that mining can continue, but its directors back on earth are touting its cultural and scientific value as well. It's a big job, but the applications are many and the work is rewarding.
